Killing the boredom by watching various Netflix’s Cooking/Food TV Shows.

Outbreak or not, I’m mostly spending my life staying at home. A tiny mansion in the heart of Tokyo that have a very beautiful scenery of Fuji-san. Gorgeoussssss.

Oh yeah I woke up to that everyday (insert cool emoji here).

My only ‘friend’ is mostly this blog, Youtube, and Netflix (without chill). Sometimes the Amazon Prime if I can’t find a good horror movies (for some reason, Amazon Prime has lots of horror movies yehahahaha).

Give me a good movie, I will not hesitate to watch it.

Talking about movies, I could say I’m quite a movie buff. I had a friend who worked in entertainment/television industry once and we used to have a discussion about the very binge-worthy watching to meh level.

Money Heist (Spain, Spanish title: La Casa de Papel), Netflix

I am fond of suspense-detective/psychological thriller genre movies/TV dramas (I did mention I am not into romantic or romantic-comedy genre). Since Netflix came and save the ‘introverts’ life (probably only me?), I started watching the non-English TV dramas as well. Unfamiliar with the languages? No problem at all. It is very interesting to know about other languages. I could say I have watched the Icelandic, Norway, Irish, Swedish, Polish, Danish, Korean, Spanish, Taiwan, Chinese… anything I could find the police-crime theme, I am okay with it! (Will talk about it in another time)

But recently, I got bored, my head got heavy (too many bodies, too many thinking, TOO MANY DEATHS OMG), so I was loo king for the nice, light, fun dramas/reality show that could ease my brain during the #SelfQuarantine.

I am into standup joke, but sometimes it is tiring to hear it only. I need something to enjoy my eyes as well.

So I started to watching…

THESE VARIOUS COOKING SHOWS.

OH GOD. IT IS VERY AMUSING.

“I never doubt myself about my cooking ability, but I am just as lazy as ass to cook HAHA. It is mostly I never really cook for myself, I prefer cook for someone else.”

-Said the person who miserably failed at frying her own karaage TWICE.

Of course the cooking show motivates me to create some magic in my tiny kitchen, but I’m saving it later for… the right time.

So allow me, to introduce some TV Shows that pretty good to watch. Light, entertaining, and could give you a good tips when you’re baking or cooking!

What to watch today?
  1. NAILED IT

I swear if this program is available in Japan, I would love to join. It is about a bunch of amateurs bakers that is challenged to re-create what the real professional bakers masterpiece in limited time!

(most of) the result turns out failed it—instead of nailed it, but some of them could reveal their true bakers soul and did a good effort!

Nicole Byer and Jacques Torres on Nailed It! by Netflix

The host, Nicole Byer alongside with her co-host, a French pastry chef and chocolatier Jacques Torres, even make the show more colorful and funny.

Don’t forget…

WESSSS!!!!!!!!!
  1. Kantaro: The Sweet Tooth Salaryman

Even though I am not into sweet things, Kantaro brought the world of desserts with a new whole level. His name literally has a meaning of ‘candy’ and ‘sweet’ (Kantaro Ametani) in Japanese (kanji) character.

Splish-splash with sugar water!

Not only the story about him being a book-seller salesman, the way he described the sweets he was eating also detail. With an ‘extra-dramatic’ touch and how Kantaro presented it, well, we could see Kantaro reviews of cakes or ice creams is making us wants to try them too!

  1. The Big Family Cooking Showdown

The Show is from the UK, about a whole family cooking against the other families. We can see the emotional relationship between, the teamwork, the character to each of the person in one family.

The competition also pretty interesting—the first round,

they will have to choose the ‘budgeted’ cooking materials and have to cook with the ‘bought’ one, also in the second round they have to choose the representative from their household to be challenged with one dish, and the last round again the whole family will ‘fight’ again to impress the judges with the chosen course meal. Very entertaining and touching. One of my family goal!

  1. The Final Table

Bored to see the home-cooks competing to each other in the cooking shows?

Then watch this competition between the professional and well trained chefs around the world, in a particular country-theme! Well the battle between the professionals are the true challenge! I always wanted to know what would it be if a professional gets another critique by the other professionals? Get themselves in trouble giving a nice flavors and presentations?

The Final Table really give you the roller-coaster sensation during the show especially when you’re rooting for your ‘country’ team!

  1. Cooked with Cannabis

Wanna get high but not really wanted to taste the Cannabis leaf? This show can give you a ‘high’ sensation by only watching it lolololol (This is ‘Murica!)

I am not familiar with Cannabis or Ganja (fun fact: in Aceh, Sumatra Island, ganja leafs is actually used for spices and it is okay). This pretty ‘controversial’ TV show is a normal TV shows but they are using a ‘special’ ingredient: weed~~~

Put in the medication herb! (Viceland), Cooked with Cannabis on Netflix

Not only presenting the spectacular home-made/professional-made food with Cannabis inside (and also not to mention later-get-high judges!), the show also ‘educated’ the viewer by some fun fact about Cannabis, the side effects, medication sides, and many more. Not bad………where am I?

  1. The Chef’s Line

In this extraordinary Australian cooking show, you will see the battle between the home-cooks vs. the professional chefs (from the apprentice chef to the head-chef), which making you question the ability of the professionals! Out of the box theme, and you won’t be so bored and honestly this show boost my self-esteem for cooking by: WELL I CAN BEAT THE SHIT-OUT OF SOME HEAD-CHEFS TOO.

The show also brought you to the various country-national-dish theme and will make you want to visit the restaurants too! (at least, for example, if you visit a Greek Restaurant, you will know what to order!)

  1. Zumbo’s Just Desserts
zumbo-rachelkhoo.jpg
Adriano Zumbo and Rachel Khoo on Netflix’s Zumbo’s Just Desserts (TvTonight)

Originated from Australia, for all the sweet tooth out there, the show will give you a fun and sweetness.  Hosted by the Australian pâtissier and chef Adriano Zumbo with Rachel Khoo a British cook and writer, it brings the audience to enjoy the beautiful desserts made by the talented home-bakers. The ice creams, cakes, and everything really looks delicious!

  1. Midnight Dinner: Tokyo Stories

All the stories might be fiction, but the place is real. I have visited lots of izakaya during my day in Japan from the ‘high-class’ one to the small one that located in the corner of Shinjuku.

I am actually a fan of izakaya foods (the sorted yakitori, gyunikomi, dashimaki-tamago, or you can just order whatever you want as long as the chef can cook it for you), and drink a hot-Japanese sake (atsukan), oh yesssssss. (Am I too ojisan for this? Oh I have an old Japanese man soul, I guess……..)

It doesn’t have a fancy dinner in a 5star restaurants, I don’t mind for the izakaya date!

The drama itself is about the Tencho—or the Master of the izakaya hearing the stories from his customers. Sometimes the Tencho giving a friendly advices about the happening events (or involved!). Restaurants and bars, I believe, is the place where people met and left, you can hear and see the happiness and sadness stories through the single person who are there, a conversation, a love story, a broken heart story. Everything is served together with a meal on the plate or a glass of wine.
